About SARC

The Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) was founded by two sexual assault survivors in 1977. SARC operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. SARC works closely with Oregon's Sexual Assault Task Force (www.oregonsatf.org) and other community partners in Washington, Multnomah and Clackamas Counties to ensure that best practices are followed throughout the state. On average, SARC serves over 3500 un-duplicated survivors each year.

We are a non-profit organization funded by government grants, foundations, and private donations. SARC remains a predominately volunteer-based organization - volunteers donate over 20,000 hours of time each year. Services include:

24-hour Support Line - 1-866-640-5311
SARC operates a 24-hour support line staffed with highly trained advocates who provide crisis intervention, peer support, information and referral.

Hospital Accompaniment
SARC provides accompaniment to the many hospitals when we are contacted by law enforcement, hospital personnel, or the survivor / family or friends.  The trained advocate on call is there to provide support and accompany the survivor through the evidence exam, law enforcement interview, or basic medical attention.

Case Management
The elements of case management include notification of victim rights, assistance in filing for Crime Victim’s Compensation, confirmation that all follow-up medical attention has been addressed, assistance in identifying or maneuvering through social services, accompaniment to any case related meetings or restraining/stalking order hearings, as well as emotional support.

Counseling Program
Individual counseling is available for uninsured adolescents and adults, both male and female, who otherwise would have no access to mental health services.  Sessions can be conducted in both English and Spanish

Support Group
We run twelve-week long clinical support groups three times a year for adult female survivors offering participants education, coping skills, validation and new choices to continue their recovery process.

School Education Program
A community-based teacher provides a comprehensive nine-week sexual assault prevention curriculum within the high schools of the Portland-Metro area.  Alternative schools, youth groups and activity centers are also included.

Latina Services
A group of bilingual bicultural staff and volunteers ensure that Latina survivors of sexual assault have the same access to all of SARC’s services but in a culturally specific manner.

Commercially Sexually Exploited Children
24-hour in-person crisis intervention and advocacy is available for both girls and boys who have been identified as victims of child sexual exploitation.  Case management and long-term support is provided while working with families, law enforcement, child protective services, and other social services in order to make a comprehensive safety and “new life” plan for the adolescent as they are exiting this violent world commonly known as human sex trafficking.
