What about the shoes?

We realize that by marching you're already commiting to helping our cause and speaking out against sexual violence. You might believe that NO ONE should have to wear high heels and you might wonder why we're asking you to wear them. We're asking MEN to wear high heels (preferably red) for this march for a couple of reasons:

  1. High heels are one of the myriad of uncomfortable things that our media and pop culture tells women that they should wear. Some like them, some don't, but most have probably worn them and suffered. This is a chance for men to put on those same shoes and think critically about the ways that we raise men and women differently.
  2. To be seen and noticed during the march! We want the community to think critically about gender and sexual violence issues even more than we want you to! We want all of Washington County to know about SARC's free services, which include a 24-hour crisis line for survivors of sexual assault and their family and friends, individual and group counseling, case management, and a comprehensive sexual assault education program for high school students.
We will have some heels available the day of the event for male marchers to borrow, but you might find yourself more comfortable if you purchase your own pair. We suggest browsing your local secondhand store or adult clothing store.  Remember, women's sizes are two smaller than men's sizes, so if you normally wear a men's 13, buy a women's 15.

Also, Le Dame Footware provides the official shoe of the national Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® organization, in addition to many other shoes designed specifically for a male foot. View their catalog at: http://www.ledame.com/shoes.html

But WOMEN don't need to worry about wearing high heels for the march - they are encouraged to wear comfortable footware as they march alongside!
